Anise Star -
Anise Star
Broken into bits, this hard brown pod with eight star-like points is similar to anise seed but with a more intense spicier licorice-like flavor. Found in China, this spice is the signature taste in many Chinese braises. Star Anise also is an excellent rub for pork, a mystery flavor for bean dishes or extra spice for carrot cake or cookies.
