Maltitol is a sugar substitute used in production of sweet sugarless hard candies, chewing gum, chocolates, baked goods, and ice cream. The pharmaceutical industry uses Maltitol where it functions as a low-calorie sweetening agent. Similar to sucrose it can be used in syrups with less likely crystallization. Its food energy value is about half of the sucrose.

Warning: Consumption of more than 100 g / day (about 3 oz.) of Maltitol may cause excessive laxative functions and gastric problems.
