White Sesame Seeds Sesame seeds are most commonly white or black, though red and brown varieties pop up every now and then. Whatever the color, the flavor is quite consistent. They add a depth of flavor reminiscent of dry-roasted nuts to many dishes, most commonly Asian ones. White sesame seeds are used in many maki (rolled) sushi items as well as in salads and sauces. Combine roasted sesame seeds, mild white vinegar, soy sauce, scallions, and ginger for shabu-shabu dipping sauce.
